Mundi ~ Music of and for the world.

Classical guitar, violin, cello, bass, and an arsenal of percussion (both traditional and found), Mundi masterfully creates a sound that is rich, celebratory, dynamic, and deeply emotive. The quintet infuses their old world compositions with the energy and vitality of their diverse influences. Mundi displays a healthy disregard for where the boundaries of folk, classical, and rock lie.

Wassail 2011 Promises Ren-Fest-style Seasonal Celebration with a Difference

Over the last 9 years, this Wassail fundraiser for Sudan’s children in need in Austin’s Hyde Park has grown into a very popular annual event. A gathering of the city’s musicians, actors, poets and magicians creates a lively service in an ‘English village hall’… this year at the Spiderhouse Ballroom near U.T. (2908 Fruth Street Austin, TX 78705). Map below.

It’s family-friendly, and honors Christmas and the winter Solstice.
This year’s event takes place on Dec 18 at 5:30 pm. Tickets are $12. Children under 12, free.

‘There will be dance, and a play, and carols, and magic from John Maverick and poetry from Thom Anon… and a play based on the Nutcracker, written by award winning actor/composer Chris Humphrey,’ says director Darrel Mayers.
All the artists donate their talents to raise funds for the UK charity Kids for Kids. They provide children and families with animals and tools for survival in the western Darfur region of the Sudan.

The charity has 51 ‘Kids for Kids villages’ where they create sustainable solutions to a population battling poverty and starvation.

Goats, donkeys, blankets, ploughs, trees, water harvesters, farm tools, vaccinations and education are some of important things that this small charity brings to the area. Wassail 2009 raised $1,642, and last year the total rose to $2,000 (More information on the charity at www.kidsforkids.org.uk)

In January, Patricia Parker MBE, chairman of the charity, wrote to Mayers and all the Austin artists thanking them for their ‘wonderful donation’ and shared the good news that they had just been able to provide ‘blankets and mosquito nets for 1,000 homes, and last week 40 first aid workers started their training.’
Among the performers this year are Thom Anon, Bucolics Anonymous, the Pratt’s Bottom Mummers, magician John Maverick, the Occasional Terpsichore Morris Dancers, Rita Ricardo, Aimee Zivin.

This year’s Wassail is sponsored by Things Celtic, the Austin Chronicle, the Sticky Toffee Pudding Company, Texpert Tours, Austin Friends of Traditional Music, Drumz, the VORTEX, Natural Magick Shop, Full English Café.
________________________________________________________
* ‘Wassail’ is a seasonal drink as well as a toast. In medieval Europe they would concoct drinks with spiced ale, wine or cider, and then raise glasses to each other, saying ‘Wassail!’ – which from the old English phrase ‘was hal’ means ‘be well,’ or ‘be whole.’
